Terms of use

This translation is provided for convenience. In case of discrepancy, the French version prevails.
1. Purpose and acceptance
These terms govern the use of the Hikez app. You accept them by downloading or using the app.
The social features also require you to accept them expressly when you create your account.
2. The service
Hikez is a hiking journal. It lets you:
- record your hikes live, or add them manually or from a GPX file;
- follow a route, with an alert when you stray from it;
- rate your hikes and illustrate them with photos, notes, sounds and waypoints;
- detect the summits you reach;
- view your statistics and download offline maps;
- replay a hike as a 3D flyover.
The app works without an account. Your journal then stays on your iPhone, and in your private iCloud if iCloud backup is turned on.
The optional social mode adds:
- an account and a profile;
- sharing of your hikes;
- a feed, following, likes and comments;
- a monthly leaderboard;
- a community map of tracks.
3. Your account
- You must be 15 or older to create an account.
- You sign in with “Sign in with Apple”. One account per person.
- Your username is unique. It must not impersonate a person or a brand, or be offensive. The publisher may refuse it or require you to change it.
- Your account can be public or private. The hikes of a private account are visible only to the followers it approves.
- You can delete your account at any time from the app (Settings).
- The following are deleted: your profile, your posted hikes, your photos, your comments and your likes.
- Your “Sign in with Apple” authorisation is revoked with Apple.
- The journal on your iPhone is not affected.
- Tracks shared on the community map remain, in anonymous form (article 5).
4. Visibility of your hikes
Each hike offers two separate choices:
- post it to the feed, with the photo of your choice. It is visible to everyone if your account is public, and only to your approved followers if it is private;
- share its track on the community map. The track appears there without your username. A private account does not share its tracks on the map.
The first 200 and last 200 metres of each published track are hidden from other users, to protect your home.
5. What you publish
- You remain the owner of your content: hikes, tracks, photos, comments.
- Feed, profile and comments. By publishing them, you grant the publisher a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to host them and show them to the people allowed by your settings, for as long as they are published.
- Tracks shared on the community map (a hike, or an imported route in your
library).
- You grant the publisher a free, worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual and irrevocable licence to host, reproduce, adapt and distribute this track within the Hikez service. Adaptation covers simplification, grouping of similar tracks and the calculation of statistics (distance, elevation gain, difficulty, shape).
- You allow other users to view the track, follow it and add it to their library.
- The publisher does not sell tracks to third parties.
- What remains if you remove a track or delete your account. The track stays on the
map anonymously.
- Only the line of the trail and its altitudes remain, with no timestamps and without its first and last 200 metres.
- The following are deleted: your username, your rating, your photos, and the comments and likes on the hike.
- Photos of a track. The photos taken on the trail that you choose to show illustrate the track on the map, without their metadata. They are deleted in four cases: you hide them, you remove the track, you delete the hike, or you delete your account.
- Third-party rights. You guarantee that you have the right to share what you publish. Do not share a track taken from a website or guidebook that forbids it, or a photo of a person without their consent.
- Removal. You can remove a post at any time, under the conditions above. The “…” menu of a hike removes it from the feed.
6. Community rules and moderation
Zero tolerance for:
- hateful, harassing, violent, sexual or discriminatory content;
- impersonation, spam and unsolicited advertising;
- publishing other people’s personal information;
- illegal content or content that encourages dangerous behaviour.
Filtering. Offensive or hateful words are filtered automatically, in French, English, Spanish and German:
- a comment, display name or bio that contains them is rejected;
- a hike title or track name that contains them is erased.
Report. Every hike, comment, profile, track and map photo can be reported from its “…” menu.
- Each report is sent to the moderation team and reviewed within 24 hours.
- Content reported by three different people is hidden automatically pending that review.
Block. Any user can block another. The effect is immediate and works both ways: you no longer see their content, and they no longer see yours.
Report without an account. Anyone can report illegal content, even without an account, to moderation@hikez.app. The report must include:
- where the content is located (username, name of the hike or track);
- the reasons why it is illegal;
- your name and email address, except for child sexual abuse material;
- a statement of good faith.
Decisions. The publisher may:
- hide or remove content;
- remove an account from the leaderboard;
- suspend or ban an account. A banned account disappears for all other users.
In the event of a serious breach, these decisions may be taken without notice.
The author is notified. As soon as one of their items of content is hidden or their account is suspended, the app tells them: the content concerned, the date, the reason, and whether it is an automatic hiding pending review. For as long as the decision lasts, it remains visible on their profile and next to the content.
Appeal. The “Appeal” button prepares an email to moderation@hikez.app with the reference of the decision. The request is re-examined by a person, and the content is restored if the appeal is well founded.
Manifestly illegal content is reported to the authorities (PHAROS platform).
7. Monthly leaderboard
- Only hikes recorded live with the app count, as a free hike or while following a route. Imported or manually entered hikes are not included.
- A recorded hike counts even if you do not post it. Its figures and its recording are then sent for verification, without being visible to anyone. Only your monthly totals appear on the leaderboard.
- The plausibility of recordings is checked (speed, elevation gain, continuity of the track). An implausible hike may be excluded, and an account that cheats may be removed from the leaderboard.
- The leaderboard does not entitle you to any reward.

Family Sharing is not offered.
9. Mountain safety
- Hikez is not a certified navigation instrument. Do not rely on it alone to find your way.
- Always carry a map, a means of communication and suitable equipment.
- GPS, altitude, weather, durations and difficulty are provided for guidance only.
- Community tracks are published by users and are not checked by Hikez. They may be inaccurate, outdated or dangerous: check them before you set off. You hike at your own risk.
10. Liability and availability
- The publisher is not the author of the content published by users. It removes such content promptly when it is reported as illegal.
- Some features require an internet connection: weather, map downloads, social mode. The publisher strives to keep them available, without guaranteeing an uninterrupted service.
- The publisher cannot be held liable for an accident that occurs while hiking.
11. Changes
Significant changes to these terms are announced in the app before they take effect.
12. Governing law and disputes
- French law applies.
- In the event of a disagreement, first write to support@hikez.app.
- If no agreement is reached, you may use the consumer mediator free of charge.
- Failing that, the French courts have jurisdiction. Consumers may bring proceedings before the court of their place of residence.
End user licence agreement (EULA)
This agreement is between the user (“you”) and Teddy Verneuil EI (“the publisher”) for the use of the Hikez app. It supplements the terms of use above, which also apply.
1. Licence
The publisher grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to use Hikez on the Apple devices that you own or control. This licence is exercised in accordance with the App Store usage rules.
2. Restrictions
You may not:
- copy, modify, rent, lend, sell or redistribute the app;
- decompile it or extract its code, except where permitted by law;
- bulk-extract community tracks, photos or profiles;
- use the app for an illegal purpose;
- remove proprietary notices.
3. Ownership
The app remains the property of the publisher. This agreement only gives you a right of use.
Your content remains yours (article 5 of the terms of use).
4. Warranty and liability
- The app is provided as is. It is a hiking aid and not a certified navigation or safety instrument.
- To the extent permitted by law, the publisher is not liable for indirect damages arising from its use.
- The statutory consumer guarantees (conformity, hidden defects) continue to apply.
5. Apple
- This agreement is concluded between you and the publisher, not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app, its content, or its maintenance or support.
- In the event of non-conformity, you may notify Apple. Apple may refund the price paid and will have no other warranty obligation.
- Claims relating to the app, including those concerning third-party intellectual property, are the responsibility of the publisher.
- You declare that you do not reside in a country subject to a United States embargo, and that you are not on a US list of sanctioned persons.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement and may enforce it.
6. Termination
The agreement ends if you do not comply with its terms. You must then stop using the app.
